Guide
Your chats hold months of work. You can download all of them in one file, in a few minutes.

Open Settings, then "Data controls", then "Export data", and confirm. You receive an email with a link to a ZIP file holding all your conversations. The link expires after a limited time, so download the file when it arrives.
From your picture or name in ChatGPT, choose Settings.
Go to "Data controls" and choose "Export data".
The link is sent to your account email. A large archive can take a while.
Open the link and download the ZIP before it expires.
We checked these steps in October 2026. Menu names can change, so see the official help page if an option is not where we say.
| File | What it holds |
|---|---|
| conversations.json | All your chats in a format programs can read. This is the file other tools import. |
| chat.html | Your chats as a page you open in a browser and read directly. |
| Other files | Account data, and the images and files you uploaded. |
The file holds everything you wrote, some of it private. Do not upload it to a site you do not trust, and do not email it unprotected.
The export centres on chats and account data. To keep the memory, ask ChatGPT to list everything it remembers about you and copy it.
Copy its text, or use the share option to create a link. Full export covers the whole archive.
A deleted chat cannot be restored inside ChatGPT. If you exported your data before deleting, it is in the file.
In Claude settings, under Privacy, choose to export data. The link arrives by email in the same way.
