Export ChatGPT conversations
How to export all your ChatGPT conversations in one file, what the file contains, and how to use it in another tool or keep it as a backup.
Guide
You have decided to try Claude, and months of your work sit in ChatGPT. Here is what you can move, what stays behind, and how not to lose it.

You can move three things: a summary of your memory through Claude's import tool, your custom instructions by copy and paste, and your project files by uploading them again. Your chat history is not readable by Claude, unless you keep it in an independent memory both tools read.
| From ChatGPT | Does it reach Claude? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Saved memories | Yes, as a summary | The memory import tool in Claude settings |
| Custom instructions | Yes, by hand | Copy them into Claude instructions or a project's instructions |
| Project files | Yes, by hand | Upload them again to a Claude project |
| Chat history | No | It stays in ChatGPT. Export it to keep it |
| Custom GPTs | No | Rebuild them as Claude projects with their instructions and files |
We checked these steps in October 2026. Menu names can change, so see the official help page if an option is not where we say.
Before anything else, download a full copy of your chats. Steps are in the export guide.
In Claude settings, open memory, choose to import from another tool, and follow the prompts.
Copy your custom instructions, create a project per piece of work, and upload its files.
Ask Claude: "What do you know about me?" and correct what is missing or out of date.
The import tool carries a one-off snapshot: a summary of you at the moment of transfer. It does not carry the detail of your chats, and it does not update afterwards.
So if you go back to ChatGPT for a task, what you say there never reaches Claude. You end up with two memories that drift apart.
The alternative is not to move the memory at all. Put it somewhere independent that both tools read: upload your ChatGPT conversations to Memory Bridge once, and connect it to ChatGPT and Claude.
After that you work in either, and what you save in one is there in the other. See how to import your conversations.
No. Export your data first, make sure the file arrived and opens, then decide.
You can upload it as a file in a chat, but it is usually large and will not be read in full. Importing it into an independent memory is more useful.
The same steps in reverse. With an independent memory you need no transfer in either direction.

Four ways to share context between AI tools: copy and paste, a context file, memory import, and a shared memory. What each is good for and where it stops.
A memory that is not Claude's alone. Connect Claude to Memory Bridge and stop re-explaining your work.
The trial is invite-only for now. Request access and we will write to you when your seat opens.
