Export ChatGPT conversations
How to export all your ChatGPT conversations in one file, what the file contains, and how to use it in another tool or keep it as a backup.
Guide
No. A deleted ChatGPT chat cannot be restored, in the app or by OpenAI Support. An archived chat is still in your account, and you can unarchive it in Settings.
If you exported your data before deleting, the chat is still in that export file. If a chat vanished and you do not remember deleting it, check your archived chats first.

From your account menu in ChatGPT, choose Settings.
Select Data controls, then Archived chats or View archived chats, depending on your device. Select Manage if it appears.
Select Unarchive next to the chat. It goes back to your regular history in the sidebar.

Start with archived chats. Archiving takes a chat out of the sidebar but keeps it in your account, and archived chats still show up in search. If it is not there:
ChatGPT removes it from your account straight away. OpenAI then schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless it has to keep it longer for security or legal reasons. During those 30 days it cannot be brought back, in the app or through Support.
Delete all chats, in Settings, is just as final, and it can include the chats in your projects. Read the guide to deleting ChatGPT chats before you use it.
Yes, it can. An archived chat is still in your account, and OpenAI lists archived chats among the sources memory can draw on.
Deleting a chat can also leave behind what memory saved from it. To make ChatGPT forget something, delete the chat it came from, then open Settings, Personalization, Memory, and delete it there too.
Export your data now and then: Settings, Data controls, Export data. You get a link to a ZIP file of your chat history. It can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the link expires 24 hours after you receive it.
An export cannot bring back chats deleted before it was made, so make it a habit before you delete anything. Full steps are in the ChatGPT export guide.
When you go looking for an old chat, you are usually after a decision you made or a number you agreed. Upload your export to Memory Bridge and pick the conversations that matter, and what they hold becomes part of your memory: notes you can read and edit, each with its source and date.
Delete the chat in ChatGPT later and the note stays, readable by your other AI tools as well.
No. An archived chat stays in your account until you delete it, and archiving does not change how long it is kept. In a work account, your organisation's retention policy can still remove it.
Not with OpenAI. The only copies are in an export you requested before deleting, text you copied yourself, or the account of someone who opened a share link you sent and continued the chat.
It never enters your history, and once you leave it you cannot reopen it unless you saved it first. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
No. Archiving has no effect on the Improve the model for everyone setting, and archived chats follow it like any other. More in Are ChatGPT chats private?
