Why does ChatGPT forget what you told it?

You explained your project in detail and it asked about it again. That is not a fault. It is how it works, and there are fixes.

The short answer

ChatGPT forgets for three reasons: every new chat starts without the context of earlier chats, a long chat exceeds what it can read at once, and its saved memory holds short facts, not the detail of your work.

The three causes

A new chat

The model reads what is in the current chat. It does not see what you said in another one, except what its memory kept.

A chat that ran long

Every model has a limit on what it reads at once. As a chat grows, it pays less attention to the beginning.

A brief memory

ChatGPT memory keeps short facts about you. The long detail of your project does not go in whole.

What you can do inside ChatGPT

  • Check that memory is on: Settings, then Personalization, then Memory.
  • Ask it to save things outright: "Remember that our maximum discount is 10%."
  • Start a new chat per topic rather than stretching one for weeks.
  • Use projects to group the chats and files of one piece of work.
  • Put what you want in every chat into custom instructions.

We checked these steps in October 2026. Menu names can change, so see the official help page if an option is not where we say.

And if that is not enough?

These fixes ease the problem inside ChatGPT. They do not help when your work has more detail than its memory holds, or when you also work in Claude or Gemini.

That is where an independent memory helps: full notes about your work, read by ChatGPT and your other tools. See the comparison with ChatGPT memory.

Common questions

Does ChatGPT forget within the same chat?

In very long chats, yes. It pays less attention to the start. Summarise what you agreed and begin a new chat.

Does a paid plan fix it?

Paid plans raise limits and add memory management features, but the nature is the same: a new chat starts with only what is in memory.

Why does it remember things I never asked it to save?

Because it draws out what it finds useful from your chats. You can see it in memory settings and delete what you do not want.

Does ChatGPT remember across chats?

Yes: ChatGPT keeps your chats in your account and holds facts about you in memory. What it saves, what it recalls across conversations, and how to control it.

AI memory vs context window

The context window is what a model reads in the current chat; memory is what remains afterwards. A plain explanation of the two, and of how RAG differs from both.

ChatGPT memory

ChatGPT memory keeps short facts about you inside ChatGPT alone. Memory Bridge keeps knowledge about your work as notes every tool can read. An honest comparison.

One memory. Every tool you use.
