Where is my AI memory stored, and who can see it?
Privacy and control in Memory Bridge: where your AI memory is kept, who can read it, what reaches your AI tools, and how to correct or delete your data.
Guide
Not fully. ChatGPT chats are not public, but OpenAI may use them to train its models unless you opt out, and authorised staff may access them when needed.
You can narrow that in settings: turn off Improve the model for everyone, and use a temporary chat for anything you do not want kept in your history.
Last reviewed:
| Who | When |
|---|---|
| You | Always, in your history, until you delete the chat. |
| A limited number of authorised OpenAI staff and service providers bound by confidentiality | Only as needed: to investigate abuse or a security incident, to help when you contact support, for legal matters, or to improve models unless you opted out. |
| Model training | While Improve the model for everyone is on in a personal account. |
| Anyone with a link you shared | They see the chat as it was when the link was made, and can pass the link on. |
| Advertisers | No. OpenAI says it does not sell your data or share your ChatGPT conversations with advertisers. |
Checked in October 2026 against the official help pages: How OpenAI handles data in consumer services, How your data is used to improve model performance, Data controls in ChatGPT, Sharing conversations in ChatGPT, Temporary chat in ChatGPT and Memory in ChatGPT. Menu names change, so check there if an option is not where we say.
A chat only reaches other people if you share a link to it. OpenAI says shared-link pages are not meant to be indexed by search engines, but that does not make a link private: anyone who has it can open it and forward it.
To review your links, open Settings, then Data controls, and select Manage next to Shared links. Delete the ones you no longer need, or open More actions to delete them all. Deleting a chat also deletes its link.
Open Settings, then Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone. New chats are no longer used for training, and they still appear in your history.
A temporary chat stays out of your history and is not used for training while it remains temporary. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
Deleted chats leave your account at once and OpenAI's systems within 30 days, and they do not come back, as the guide to recovering ChatGPT chats explains. Steps are in the guide to deleting ChatGPT chats.
A thumbs up or down can send the whole conversation into training, even after you opt out.
Memory keeps what you tell ChatGPT about yourself, sensitive details included if you share them. On personal accounts, chats and remembered information may be used for training while Improve the model for everyone is on.
Review what is saved under Settings, Personalization, Memory, and delete what you do not want. For a chat that neither uses nor adds to memory, start a temporary chat and choose Unpersonalized before your first message. How memory differs from custom instructions is in the guide to memory, instructions and projects.
By default, OpenAI does not train on content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspaces, and the organisation sets its own retention and access policies. If you use ChatGPT through work, ask your workspace admin what applies to you.
If you connect an AI tool to an outside memory, ask that memory the same questions: who can read it, and what does the company do with it?
Memory Bridge does not sell your data and does not use the text of your notes to train general-purpose AI models. You can export your content whenever you like, and stop any tool's access at any time.
A tool you connect, such as ChatGPT, processes what it reads from your memory on its own systems and under its own policy. Details are on the privacy and control page.
OpenAI says access to conversations is limited to a small number of authorised staff and service providers, for specific reasons such as investigating abuse or improving models, and that every access is logged.
On OpenAI's systems and those of its service providers, in the US and elsewhere, according to OpenAI's page on consumer data.
The link does not open your account, but anyone who has it can read the chat and forward it, and shared links have no expiry date. Delete a link once you no longer need it.
No, but Google says human reviewers read a subset of chats while Keep Activity is on, and reviewed chats are kept for up to three years. Google advises against entering anything you would not want a reviewer to see. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
