ChatGPT memory full
Seeing "Memory full" in ChatGPT? What it means, how to free space without losing what matters, and what to do if it keeps happening.
Guide
You can delete a single memory, clear everything it holds about you, or turn memory off. Pick what fits your need.
Last reviewed:
Open Settings, then Personalization, then Memory, then "Manage". Delete the memory you want, or choose to clear all. This does not delete your chats, which are removed separately.
| What you want | How |
|---|---|
| Delete one memory | Settings, Personalization, Memory, Manage, then delete the item. Or tell it: "Forget that I work in such-and-such." |
| Clear all memory | On the same Manage page, choose to clear all. |
| Stop it saving | Turn off saved memories and reference to past chats. |
| A chat that is not kept | Start a temporary chat. It stays out of history and does not use memory. |
We checked these steps in October 2026. Menu names can change, so see the official help page if an option is not where we say.
Memory and chat history are separate. Clear memory and your chats remain. Delete a chat and what was saved from it may remain in memory.
To remove every trace: delete your chats under "Data controls", then clear memory.
Clearing is permanent. If the memory holds something useful, ask it to list everything it remembers about you and copy that first.
If you are clearing because you do not know what was saved about you, the problem is visibility, not memory. In Memory Bridge you see every note and its source, and you edit what you want. Read about a memory you can read and edit.
Retention after deletion is set by OpenAI's policy. See the official help page for details.
Reference to past chats may still be on, so it draws on your chat history. Turn it off, or delete the chats themselves.
Each has a memory management page in settings where you delete what you want. The steps differ slightly between tools.

Yes: ChatGPT keeps your chats in your account and holds facts about you in memory. What it saves, what it recalls across conversations, and how to control it.
Plain answers: what we store, where, who can reach it, what goes out to AI tools, and how to correct your data or ask for it to be destroyed.
