Guide

Does Claude remember across chats?

Yes, when memory is on. Claude saves what it learns about you and your work as topics you can read and edit, and on paid plans it can also search your past chats.

Memory is on by default on the Free, Pro and Max plans, under Settings, Memory. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner has to make it available first.

What does Claude remember about you?

Claude saves memory as separate topics while you chat, and lists them all under Topics in Settings, Memory. Anthropic gives these examples:

  • Your role, projects and professional context.
  • The people and places in your work and life.
  • How you like to communicate and work.
  • Technical preferences and coding style.
  • Project details and ongoing work.

It does not store sensitive subjects such as health, religion or politics unless you turn on Include sensitive topics in memory.

Why does Claude keep forgetting?

  • Memory is off for your account, or you turned it off for this chat from the + menu before the first message.
  • The chat is incognito, so it stays out of your history and out of memory.
  • The detail lives in another project. Each project keeps its own memory, apart from other projects and from chats outside them.
  • You are on the free plan, and searching past chats is for paid plans.
  • The chat has grown very long, and the model reads a limited amount of text at a time.

Does each Claude project have its own memory?

Yes. Each project has its own memory space and summary, kept apart from other projects and from chats outside projects. Files you add to a project's knowledge are used in every chat in that project.

How to edit or delete what Claude remembers

Open Memory in settings, select a topic to read it, then edit or delete it; the change applies to every conversation from then on. You can also ask Claude in a chat to change or forget something.

Deleting a chat does not delete the memory it produced, so remove that from the topic itself. To stop memory you have two options: Pause keeps what is saved but stops Claude using or adding to it, and Reset permanently deletes all memory, project memory included.

Where Memory Bridge fits

Claude's memory works inside Claude, one project at a time. Explain a client to ChatGPT yesterday and Claude knows nothing about them today.

Memory Bridge keeps notes about your work in one place that Claude, ChatGPT and the coding tools you connect all read. See the comparison with Claude memory, or which AI remembers your work best.

Common questions

Is Claude memory available on the free plan?

Yes. Memory is on by default on Free, Pro and Max. Searching past chats is for paid plans.

Can I bring my ChatGPT memory into Claude?

Yes, with the import tool: Settings, Memory, Start import. You paste what ChatGPT remembers about you and Claude turns it into memory topics. Anthropic calls the feature experimental. More in the guide to moving memory between AI tools.

What is an incognito chat in Claude?

A chat that is not saved to your history or to Claude's memory, and that Claude skips when it searches past chats. Start one from the ghost icon outside a project; once closed, it cannot be reopened.

How do I keep a copy of my Claude chats?

Export your data from Settings, Privacy. Steps are in the guide to exporting Claude conversations.
